Transformation in Her
~Elizabeth Marie Wise~

When does a girl become a woman?
Is it when her lips taste pure passion?
Is it when she realizes her parents are no longer perfect?
Is it when they don't see eye to eye, the emotions difficult to connect?
Is it when her hero father falls ill to ales?
Is it when she becomes the parent and dad's confusion prevails?
Is it when her mother forces her to choose?
No longer child's play but between parent and husband she refuses to lose?
Is it when her step-father respects his girl but supports his wife?
Is it when she knows it kills her parents when she just wants to live her life?
Is it when her husband begs her forgiveness?
Is it when deep secrets become hecklers' business?
Is it when this girl's children stare through her eyes deep into her heart?
Does the girl become a woman when her daughters' innocent words prove sharp?
When does a girl become a woman of strength?
Is it when she learns that everything in life can break?
Does a girl become a woman when she decides she once again wants to be a girl?
Is it when she loses satisfaction, zest for life, loses the desire for spontaneous whirls?
Once a child begging to grow up and transform with much speed;
She must now embrace her decisions, wade emotions and balance others' deeds.
She must listen to her heart, her God, her spirit;
She faces herself in the mirror, learns to give herself merit.
Transforming backwards from a woman into a girl is simply not an option;
She's seen other women transform and her mind is wary with strict caution.
Happiness she seeks as neighbor acquaintances she fools;
When a girl becomes a woman she must mind proper new rules.
